Dating back to 1340 the New Cathedral replaced St Marys Church following the invasion of the Normans in 1066, the gothic style has been maintained following several repairs and restoration projects over the years due to civil wars.

The Grade 1 listed building is the only English medieval cathedral to have three spires – known locally as the ‘Ladies of the Vale’ – it is one of the most elegant in the Country.

Lowe and Oliver worked closely with the lighting consultant ‘Light Perceptions’ to supply and commission the new lighting system. The Cathedral comprises of environmentally friendly LED lights controlled via a Lutron Homeworks System. The lights are all dimmable and are mains dimmable. The new wiring of the lighting system was installed using SWA cables within the roof spaces and where surface, the cabling was mineral insulated. The Lutron control panels have been installed within the roof spaces and the Triforiums, along with static inverters to control the emergency light fittings.

Lowe and Oliver worked closely with the lighting consultant ‘Light Perceptions’ to deliver new lighting and fire alarm systems within the Abbey. The lighting was controlled via Lutron homeworks and the control of the LED’s was DMX modules. The modules were located at the east and west end within a cabinet installed out of public sight. The wiring for this was carried out in SY multicore cable. The fire alarm system was wired in Micc throughout and was clipped directly with the building’s fabric. The fire alarm system comprises of smoke detectors, manual call points, heat detectors and beam detection.
